The two indigenously built warships ‘Surat’ and ‘Udaygiri’ were launched at the Mazagon Docks in Mumbai on Tuesday 17 may by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
The two indigenously built warships were launched simultaneously for the first time, according to Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL).
The MDL is a government-owned shipbuilding and submarine-building company
The fourth ship of the Project 15B Destroyers, which heralds a significant makeover of the P15A (Kolkata Class) destroyers, is named after Surat, Gujarat’s commercial capital and Western India’s second largest commercial hub after Mumbai, according to the Navy. The Navy’s next generation stealth guided missile destroyers, the Project 15B class, are being built at the MDL.
The third ship of Project 17A Frigates, Udaygiri, is named after a mountain range in Andhra Pradesh
According to the Navy, it is a follow-on to the P17 Frigates (Shivalik Class) with improved stealth, advanced weapons and sensors, and platform management systems.
The new warship is a reincarnation of the former ‘Udaygiri,’ the Leander Class ASW Frigate, which served the country for three decades, from February 1976 to August 2007, and saw numerous challenging operations.
