• State Transport Minister Antony Raju announced on Tuesday 17 may.

State Transport Minister Antony Raju said on Tuesday that a significant number of the state-run KSRTC buses in Kerala will not be scrapped as planned, but will instead be converted into classrooms.

New experience for kids

Several Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) buses that were idle after the pandemic struck are not in a condition to be re-routed.The minister stated that there have been requests to use the buses more effectively rather than selling them as scrap.

As a result, we decided to convert the low-floor buses into classrooms. “We felt it should be a new experience for the kids,” Raju explained. The request, he said, came from none other than State Education Minister V.Sivankutty, and it was met with an immediate nod.

First such classroom in state

The first such classroom will open in a state-run school in the capital, which will receive two low-floor buses. According to sources, approximately 400 KSRTC buses are no longer roadworthy and must be scrapped. Its unclear how many of these will be converted into classrooms.
