On Sunday, 15th may Hassan Sheikh Mohamud was re-elected as Somalia’s president, five years after he was voted out.

After three rounds of voting, Mohamud defeated the incumbent, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, in a runoff in an election that had been delayed for over a year.

The newly elected president defeated his opponent with 214 votes, while Mohamed received only 110 votes

Members of parliament and senators who chose Mohamud were chosen by clan leaders’ delegates. The president was supposed to be elected by the Somali people using universal suffrage, but the country’s political elite eventually abandoned that plan.

The news of Mohamud’s victory was met with cheers and gunshots fired into the air in the Mogadishu capital.

On Sunday 15 May, Mohamed and Mohamud sat side by side, calmly watching the votes be counted.

“Hassan Sheik Mohamud is the winner of the presidential election in the Somali Federal Republic,” said Sheikh Adan Mohamed Nur, the lower house speaker. Mohamed conceded defeat, and Mohamud has sworn in right away.
