The ‘water for all’ policy, which aims to make all structures, including unmapped slum settlements, eligible for BMC water connections, is expected to be implemented in the city on May 1, said state cabinet minister Aaditya Thackeray
A Great initiative to practically implement fundamental right to one of the most valuable elements for human existence
At the moment, only structures that have been mapped by the BMC are eligible for a water connection. Slums on private or commercial property, as well as illegal establishments, receive no supplies from the civic authority.
Water supply for previously excluded slum dwellers, unauthorized hutments, residential areas, and buildings has been proposed under the revised policy. Those who live on footpaths and roads will also have access to water.
The meeting discussed how water, which has become a fundamental right, should be made available to all Mumbai residents. “Water is also considered as an important factor in long-term development,” Thackeray said.
According to the BMC’s announcement, water will be made available by obtaining a guarantee from undeclared hut owners on private land, and water will also be made available in public bathrooms for slum dwellers living within the Coastal Regulatory Zone.
