National inter-state athletics championships: Aishwarya breaks triple jump world record with 14.14m



Just a day after recording one of the best long jump distances in India, Aishwarya Babu break a decade-old triple jump record with 14.14m on the board, at the ongoing 61st National inter-state athletics championships at the JLN Stadium in Chennai.

The Karnataka athlete had turned heads with her impressive 6.73m, the best long jump mark on Commonwealth Games since 2005 on June 13 in the qualification round itself.

Broke 11 years ago national record of Mayookha Johny

Aishwarya broke the national record of Mayookha Johny of 14.11 which was set 11 years ago. However, Aishwarya’s effort fell short of making the grade for the World championships which is set at 14.32m.

Aishwarya began the event with a jump of 13.84m and 13.16m in her first two attempts. It was Aishwarya’s third jump that saw her create the record. The second and third place in the event was bagged by Haryana’s Renu (13.43m) and Andhra Pradesh’s G Karthika (13.25m) respectively.

Gold in discus throw won by PunjabKirpal Singh of Punjab was in good form in the discus throw final, breaking his own meet record. Kirpal, who won gold in 2016 with a throw of 59.74m, won this time with a distance of 60.31m. Gagandeep Singh of Punjab (56.29m) and Vazeer of Haryana (55.99m) finished second and third, respectively.

Gold in high jump went to Tamil Nadu girl

Gracena G Merly of Tamil Nadu won the high jump gold with a distance of 1.82 metres. Gracena’s jump fell short of the 1.87m barrier set for the CWG.”I’m overjoyed to have earned gold.
