Chennai launches India’s 1st ‘Drone Police Unit’ for aerial surveillance


Chennai, July 2023 – In a pioneering move for law enforcement in India, the Greater Chennai Police (GCP) has introduced the country’s first ‘Drone Police Unit’ aimed at bolstering aerial surveillance capabilities. This groundbreaking initiative is set to revolutionize crowd management, real-time vehicle registration checks, and suspect identification, offering significant benefits to law enforcement operations.

The Drone Police Unit, which incurred an approximate cost of Rs 3.6 crore, was inaugurated by the outgoing Tamil Nadu Director General of Police, C Sylendra Babu, alongside Chennai Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal at Besant Avenue, Adyar. This notable event marks a crucial milestone in leveraging advanced technology to enhance public safety and security.

The Drone Police Unit comprises a fleet of nine drones, classified into three categories. These include six Quick Response Surveillance Drones, one Heavy Lift Multirotor Drone, and two Long Range Survey Wing Drones. Each drone is equipped with state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and possesses an operational range of 5-10 km from the ground station.
