These cells become hard and pointed, which makes it difficult for oxygen to reach all the cells in the body. Without proper treatment, this condition can become life-threatening.
Sickle Cell Anemia in Chhattisgarh
About 10% of people in Chhattisgarh could get sickle cell anemia. This includes people from certain communities. It is estimated that nearly 2 to 3 lakh people in the state suffer from this disease.
The government of Chhattisgarh started working on sickle cell anaemia in 2008. To strengthen these efforts, the Sickle Cell Institute was established in Raipur in 2012. This institute focuses on research, referral, and training related to sickle cell anemia. In 2017, screening programs were started at all health centres across the state.
National Mission to Eliminate Sickle Cell
By 2047, the Central Government wants to eradicate sickle cell anemia in India To achieve this goal, the Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission began on July 1, 2023. Under this mission, all individuals aged 0-40 years will undergo sickle cell screening. Those diagnosed will receive a Sickle Cell Card for better management of the disease.
How to Prevent Sickle Cell Anaemia
While sickle cell anaemia cannot be completely cured in most cases, early detection and proper care can help manage the disease effectively. Screening programs, public awareness, and timely treatment are essential to reduce the impact of this disorder.
