Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana: Which Will Benefit 1 Crore Middle-class Homes

Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana: After attending the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha Samaroh in Ayodhya, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has made a significant announcement aimed at providing relief in electricity bills.

The newly introduced scheme is called Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana. It’s goal is to install solar panels on the roofs of more than one crore homes. The objective is to save money spent on electricity by the poor and middle-class households.

PM Modi shared details about this scheme on the social media platform ‘X.’

Posting the details, Prime Minister Modi mentioned, “People around the world always receive energy in the light of Lord Rama, who belongs to the solar dynasty. On this auspicious occasion of Pran Pratishtha in Ayodhya, I am committed and pleased to announce the launch of the Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana to have a solar roof on every Indian household.”

PM Modi continued, “Upon returning from Ayodhya, my first decision is to start the ‘Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana’ with the aim of installing rooftop solar on one crore homes. This will not only reduce the electricity bills for the poor and middle class but also make India self-reliant in the energy sector.”

Who Will Benefit from Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana?

The biggest beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana are expected to be the poor and middle-class households. Currently, these groups spend a significant portion of their income on electricity bills. The political landscape in the country has also seen discussions and promises regarding electricity-related issues.

The scheme aims to address such concerns, and PM Modi’s announcement of installing rooftop solar on one crore homes is a significant step. The specific locations for implementing this scheme may be outlined in a roadmap released by the government in the near future.

Current scenario

Currently, about 7-8 lakh households have installed rooftop solar systems and benefited from government capital subsidy programme, resulting in about 4 GW of solar capacity.

Solar and wind energy are poised to drive two-thirds of India’s power generation growth by 2032 if the nation successfully attains its renewable energy targets.

Solar power in India has changed a lot since 2017 when it was only 1% of the country’s power. If India achieves its solar goals mentioned in the 14th National Electricity Plan (NEP14), the amount of solar power could increase from 5% to 25% between 2022 and 2032. This would be a time of fast growth for solar energy in the country.

What is Grid Connected Rooftop Solar PV System?

A Grid Connected Rooftop Solar PV System is a setup where the electricity generated from solar panels on the roof is connected to the main power grid. In this system, a device called a power conditioning unit or inverter converts the solar panel’s DC power into AC power, which is then sent to the grid.

For a one-kilowatt rooftop system, you typically need about 10 square meters of space without any shade. However, the actual space needed might change based on factors like the efficiency of the solar panels and how they are positioned.

Last year, in July, Prime Minister Modi launched a national portal for rooftop solar. Under this plan, electricity generated from solar plants goes directly into the power grid, resulting in reduced household electricity bills. A plant with one kilowatt capacity produces approximately 1200 to 1400 units of electricity.

Positive Takeaway

The Pradhan Mantri Suryodaya Yojana, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, brings a positive change for many people. With a focus on installing solar panels on the roofs of over one crore homes, the scheme aims to help the poor and middle-class families save money on their electricity bills.

By using solar energy, not only will households benefit from reduced expenses, but the initiative also contributes towards making India more self-reliant in the field of energy. This announcement shows a commitment to improving the lives of citizens and taking steps towards a greener and more sustainable future.
