PROJECT ‘ABHAYA’; DELHI POLICE CHIEF LAUNCHES PROJECT FOR SAFETY OF CHILDREN

According to sources, Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana launched Project ‘Abhaya’ a joint project of the force and an NGO for the safety and security of girls, on 20th December.

Aim of the project?

According to them, Abhaya means “fearless,” and the combined programme between the Delhi Police and the NGO Shakti Foundation is aimed at empowering, teaching, and raising awareness among children.

Need of the project?

In a statement, Delhi Police PRO Chinmoy Biswal stated that Asthana stressed that the protection of women, children, and the weaker parts is the most important obligation of any community, and that police personnel must be particularly cautious and dedicated when dealing with such problems.

“We must seek to prevent such crimes, and the inauguration of the ‘Abhaya’ project is a beginning in that regard,” Asthana said, adding that society must also be fully informed and educated.
In comparison to other Indian metropolises, he continued, the Delhi Police has a greater conviction rate in crimes against women and children.

What does the data speak?

According to data shared by the Delhi Police, its conviction rate in rape cases is 47.25 percent, compared to a national average of 39.3 percent; in molestation cases, it is 47.32 percent, compared to 27.9 percent; in kidnapping cases, it is 40 percent, compared to 35.6 percent; in outraging modesty cases, it is 50 percent, compared to 27.7%; in POCSO cases, it is 79.12 percent.
Along with the Abhaya monument, a pamphlet titled “ABHAYA” was also unveiled at the event.
