The Indian Army is embracing technological advancements with its plans to incorporate robot soldiers into its ranks within the next five years. The Director General of the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), Dr. Shailendra V Gade, shared this exciting development during his visit to attend the 13th convocation of NIT in Raipur.
DRDO’s Work on Robot Soldiers
Dr. Gade revealed that DRDO is currently engaged in robotics research, particularly in the development of both two-legged and four-legged robot soldiers. These cutting-edge machines will serve as valuable assistants to the frontline troops. They are being designed to operate alongside human soldiers, replicating their actions and contributing to military operations. The development process is challenging, yet DRDO aims to complete it within the next four to five years.
Integration of Artificial Intelligence and Decision-Making
DRDO’s vision for the robot soldiers extends beyond their physical capabilities. The organization intends to equip these AI-powered soldiers with decision-making capabilities, integrating advanced artificial intelligence technology into their systems. This combination of high-tech features will enable these soldiers to make strategic choices and significantly enhance military operations.
Advanced Todd Artillery Gun System
Dr. Gade also shared information about the Advanced Todd Artillery Gun System, a remarkable achievement by DRDO. The development of this groundbreaking gun began in 2010 and recently concluded successful trials in 2022. The Indian Army has placed an order for 307 guns, highlighting its effectiveness and demand. The gun boasts a unique 25-liter chamber and a 7-module charge system, enabling it to achieve a remarkable firing range of up to 48 kilometers. This places it among the most advanced and capable guns worldwide.
DRDO’s Industrial Academy Center of Excellence
DRDO is actively engaging with academic institutions to foster collaboration and innovation. The organization has established the Industrial Academy Center of Excellence in 15 IITs across the country, with plans to expand to all NITs. These centers aim to involve students in DRDO’s research and design initiatives, nurturing talent and fostering self-reliance in the defense sector. The program provides students with valuable opportunities to contribute to cutting-edge defense projects while gaining practical experience.
