Here’s How to Keep Your Data “Private” From Websites

Privacy appears to be an illusion in 2022, thanks to complicated end-user licence agreements, with apps and websites tracking everything from your browsing habits to where you are based. Simply put, if you have a digital life, you are vulnerable to surveillance.

While not every website is out to get you, chances are you’re giving away too much information in exchange for a more “personalised” experience. Here’s how to keep your online life private.

Browser Tweaks

Have you unwittingly enabled cookies on websites? Then you’re vulnerable to being tracked by advertisers. Clear your browser’s history completely to delete existing cookies. After deleting existing cookies, make sure to block third-party cookies in the future.

If you’re using Chrome, follow these steps: Go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Cookies and other site data > Turn Send a “Do not track” request with your browsing traffic on or off.

Use a VPN

There is no better option than using a VPN to mask your IP address and encrypt your browsing data. There is a plethora of free VPNs to choose from. A VPN, or virtual private network, protects you even when you connect to the internet via a public network. ISPs can obtain your data and sell it to advertisers for personal gain; therefore, using a
VPN would prevent any personal information from falling into the hands of third parties.

Use Tracking Blockers

Have you ever had to deal with pop-ups that included advertisements and random spam prompts? Using a tracking blocker, for example, will prevent websites from installing unauthorised cookies and tracking your browsing activity. Tracking blockers are available as browser plug-ins for the majority of browsers.

However, be cautious of what you click on, accidental permission grants, and browsing habits. It is easy to get tracked in 2022, thanks to a thriving advertising industry, but following the steps outlined above should ideally reduce some of it.
