LAUREUS WORLD SPORTS AWARDS 2022: OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST NEERAJ CHOPRA NOMINATED FOR THE PRESTIGIOUS HONOUR

Embedding another feather to his cap, Neeraj Chopra, India’s first ever winner of an Olympic athletics gold medal, is celebrating another prestigious honour. Athlete Neeraj Chopra has been nominated for the 2022 Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year Award. He is being selected as one of the six Nominees for the award.

3rd Indian to be nominated for the award

So far, two Indians have received Laureus nominations: wrestler Vinesh Phogat in 2019 and cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar in 2020. Sachin has already won the award for Best Sporting Moments. After which now, Neeraj has become only the third Indian athlete to be nominated for the Laureus Award.

The Laureus Award

The Laureus World Sports Awards was launched in 1999 by Daimler and Richemont, founding patrons of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. The prestigious award honours exceptional people and teams from the sporting world from the previous year.

The athletes and teams who excelled in 2021 will receive this year’s awards. The awards are frequently referred to as the “Oscars of Sports.”The finalists for this year’s Laureus World Sports Awards were chosen by a panel comprising more than 1,300 sports journalists and broadcasters from around the world.

Neeraj Chopra’s Competitors

The Australian Open runner-up Daniil Medvedev, British tennis player Emma Raducanu, Barcelona and Spain footballer Pedri, Venezuelan athlete Yulimar Rojas, and Australian swimmer Ariarne Titmus are the other five nominees selected for the prestigious award.

Results to be declared on April

In April 2022, the winners of the coveted awards will be announced in a “virtual” Awards Show. Following a vote by the Laureus World Sports Academy, the world’s ultimate sports jury comprised of 71 of the greatest sporting legends of all time, the winner will be declared.

Expressed his feelings via Twitter

After being nominated for the Laureus Awards, gold medalist Neeraj Chopra expressed his gratitude and expressed his feelings. Taking to Twitter he wrote, “A special feeling to be nominated along with some exceptional athletes for the Laureus World Breakthrough of the Year award”.
