Jhulan Goswami Biography: Birth, Age, Family, and Early Life
She was born on November 25, 1982, to a middle-class family in Chakdaha, West Bengal’s Nadia district. She began playing cricket at the age of 15. She became interested in cricket after watching the 1992 Cricket World Cup on television. She became more interested in sport after seeing Australian batter Belinda Clark compete in the 1997 Women’s Cricket World Cup. However, her hometown of Chakdaha did not have any cricket facilities at the time, so she travelled to Kolkata to play.
Jhulan Goswami’s Career and Work Experience
She got picked up to the Bengal women’s cricket team after completing her training in Kolkata. At the age of 19, she made her international debut in a one-day international match played against England in Chennai in 2002. Her Test debut occurred against England in Lucknow on January 14, 2002.
When she was named vice-captain of the national team prior of the 2006 tour of England, she was designated for a leadership role. She was instrumental in India’s Test series victory, which included their first victory against England. In the first Test at Leicester, she hit fifty as a nightwatchman, and in the second Test at Taunton, she got her career-best match figures of 10 for 78 – 5 for 33 and 5 for 45. She was named Player of the Series as a result of her accomplishments, and she was also honoured at the Castrol Awards in Mumbai in September. She was given a Special Award at this event.

Later in 2008, she took over the captaincy from Mithali Raj and retained it till 2011. At the 2008 Asia Cup, she also became the fourth woman to take 100 wickets in one-day internationals. She received the Arjuna Award in 2010 and, following Diana Edulji in 2012, became the second Indian woman cricketer to get the Padma Shri.
She has 40 test wickets in ten matches and 271 international wickets in 223 games. She has also hit 1593 runs with three 50s.
First female cricketer to take 200 wickets in a single day
She accomplished this feat during the Women’s Quadrangular Series. In February 2018, she became the first female cricketer to take 200 wickets in a single day. In ODIs, she has 995 runs in 166 matches. In 2011, she took 6 for 31 against New Zealand, but India lost.
In May 2017, she surpassed Australia’s Cathryn Fitzpatrick as the highest ODI wicket-taker when she grabbed her 181st wicket against South Africa at PUK Oval, Potchefstroom. She was also a member of the Indian squad that advanced to the 2017 Women’s Cricket World Cup final, where they were defeated by England by 9 runs.
In September 2018, she took her 300th wicket in international cricket against Sri Lanka. In November 2020, she was nominated for the ICC Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Decade award.
In May 2021, Goswami was nominated to India’s Test squad for a one-off match against England’s women’s cricket side. In January 2022, she was named to India’s team for the Women’s Cricket World Cup in New Zealand. In August 2018, she announced her departure from WT20Is.
