India’s Olympic Journey: How Many Medals Has India Won?

Since gaining independence in 1947, India has marked a strong and consistent presence in the Olympic Games, with Indian athletes delivering outstanding performances that have brought pride to the nation. One of India’s most significant achievements is winning eight gold medals in hockey, with five of those victories coming after independence.

India’s Glorious Olympic Journey

India’s post-independence Olympic journey has seen a remarkable evolution, with Indian athletes excelling in various sports and elevating the country’s stature on the global stage. Hockey stands out as the sport where India has achieved the greatest success, securing eight gold medals in total, five of which were won after 1947.

Indian sportsmen have also taken home medals in boxing, badminton, wrestling, and shooting in addition to hockey. Neeraj Chopra created history in 2021 when he won the first-ever gold medal for India in the javelin throw during the Olympics in Tokyo. These accomplishments will go down in Indian sports history chronicles in golden letters.

India’s First Individual Olympic Gold

The first individual gold medal for India at the Olympic Games was won by shooter Abhinav Bindra at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. His victory not only set a record but also inspired a new generation of Indian athletes. The second individual gold came from Neeraj Chopra at the Tokyo Olympics, further solidifying India’s place in the world of sports.

In recent years, India has continued to strengthen its presence in sports like badminton, wrestling, and athletics. Since independence, India has won a total of 36 Olympic medals, including 25 individual medals. The remaining medals were won by the Indian hockey team, with one medal coming from shooting in the 2024 Olympics.
