Sarojini Naidu is one such leader who has served as an inspiration and source of motivation. Sarojini Naidu was born on 13 February 1879. Born in Hyderabad, Sarojini Naidu made a mark as an activist, renowned poet and lyricist. 1. Sarojini Naidu was about 12 years old when she started her career in literature. She wrote a play called “Maher Munir” which brought her immense recognition. People from all over the world started appreciating her.

2. Sarojini Naidu received a scholarship from the Nizam of Hyderabad at the age of 16 and went to study at King’s College, London. She joined the Indian independence movement in 1905 and after that contributed to India’s freedom struggle, Sarojini Naidu went everywhere and inspired the common women of the country to participate in 
the freedom movement.

3. Her political career began in 1905, when she joined the Indian National Movement. In India from 1915 to 1918, she visited various regions and gave lectures on social welfare, women’s empowerment, and nationalism. She founded the Women’s Indian Association in 1917.

4. The British government also awarded her the Kaisar-i-Hind Medal for her work during the plague epidemic in India.

5. She became the first women governor of India and served as the governor of the United Provinces of Agra and Awadh from 1947 to 1949.

Why is Women’s Day celebrated on Sarojini Naidu’s birthday?

Sarojini Naidu’s birth anniversary is celebrated as National Women’s Day every year in India. She was a woman who deeply understood and rebelled for the emancipation of women and tried to create awareness. She helped establish the Women’s Indian Association (WIA) in 1917 which secured the vote for women and the right to hold legislative office. This was a significant achievement for the women of India contributed by Sarojini Naidu. Our country has certainly evolved to provide women with the rights they deserve.
