PM Modi in Mauritius: A Historic Moment for India and Mauritius

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with the highest civilian honor of Mauritius, the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean. This honor marks a significant moment in the history of India-Mauritius relations, as PM Modi becomes the first Indian to receive this prestigious award. The announcement was made by Mauritius’ Prime Minister, Navin Ramgoolam.

In a special gesture of appreciation, PM Modi also presented the Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cards to Mauritius President Dr. Dharmveer Gokhul, his wife Vrinda Gokhul, and Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam and his wife, Veena Ramgoolam. The presentation of the OCI cards further strengthens the bond between India and Mauritius, showcasing India’s ongoing connection with the Mauritian people.

A Moment of Pride for Both Nations

PM Modi, who is the 21st international leader to receive such an honor, expressed his deep gratitude during his visit. He acknowledged the historic relationship between the two countries and emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral ties. During his visit, PM Modi met with Mauritius President Dr. Gokhul, discussing key issues and opportunities for deeper cooperation in various fields.

This marks PM Modi’s second visit to Mauritius, having previously visited in 2015. His presence at the National Day celebrations of Mauritius underscores the importance of India-Mauritius relations in the global context.

A Symbol of Friendship and Cultural Exchange

In a symbolic gesture of unity and cultural exchange, PM Modi gifted a sacred pot of holy water from the Kumbh Mela, representing the confluence of faith and culture, as well as Makhana, a superfood from Bihar. These gifts symbolize the deep cultural ties between the two countries and serve as a reminder of India’s rich heritage.

PM Modi also visited the Ayurvedic Garden at the State House, established with the help of the Indian government. The garden highlights the growing popularity of Ayurveda in Mauritius and India’s role in promoting traditional medicine worldwide. Modi praised the Ayurvedic Garden, emphasizing the health benefits of traditional healing systems.

‘One Tree for One Mother’ Initiative

Before meeting President Gokhul, PM Modi and Prime Minister Ramgoolam participated in the ‘One Tree for One Mother’ initiative by planting a Bael tree at the Sir Shiv Sagar Ramgoolam Botanical Garden. This environmental initiative represents the shared values of nature and the commitment to preserve the planet for future generations.

A Warm Welcome by the People of Mauritius

Upon arrival, PM Modi was warmly received by Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam, along with around 200 distinguished individuals, including the Deputy Prime Minister, Chief Justice, National Assembly Speaker, Leader of the Opposition, and other high-ranking officials. The Indian community in Mauritius celebrated his arrival with a traditional Bhojpuri cultural performance, ‘Geet Gawai,’ showcasing their deep cultural roots. The welcoming crowd chanted ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ as PM Modi made his way to his hotel, raising the Indian flag in a moment of pride.
