The construction of the 464 km long six-lane expressway connecting Raipur to Visakhapatnam has gained momentum, tearing through a 68.78 km stretch of dense forests along the Dhamtari Nagri route. This expressway holds special significance, as it will be the first of its kind in Chhattisgarh, ensuring the safety of wildlife by elevating the road 4-5 feet above the ground to prevent the intrusion of wild animals.
To safeguard the natural habitat of primates, 17 canopy bridges, or “monkey bridges,” are planned along with the Seetanadi-Udanti Tiger Reserve, where the population of monkeys is abundant. Additionally, 19 animal passes have been strategically designed for the smooth movement of tigers, bears, and other animals, allowing them to traverse without hindrance.
In the endeavor to protect the elephant corridors, 8 elephant overpasses will be constructed, facilitating the free movement of these majestic creatures. The elephant corridors in Dhamtari are essential for their migratory behavior, and the overpasses will ensure their unobstructed movement.
The project includes 2.8 km long tunnels carved through the hills of Keshkal, preserving the natural terrain while maintaining connectivity. These tunnels will maintain the ecological balance and prevent any adverse effects on the surrounding environment.
For convenient commuting, the expressway will have 20 light vehicle underpasses and 7 vehicle underpasses, enabling easy passage for cars, bikes, and all kinds of vehicles. Moreover, 2 open passes will provide unrestricted access to all types of vehicles, facilitating seamless traffic flow.
The infrastructure will also feature 151 box culverts, ensuring proper drainage during the monsoon season and preventing waterlogging on the road. Additionally, 15 minor and 3 major bridges will enhance water outflow, securing the road against flooding.
The upcoming six-lane expressway promises not only smoother commuting between Raipur and Visakhapatnam but also sets a remarkable example of wildlife protection and coexistence. This eco-friendly initiative emphasizes the importance of harmonizing infrastructural development with environmental conservation, benefiting both humans and wildlife alike.
