Rajiv Kumar has been appointed as India’s Chief Election Commissioner

Rajiv Kumar has been appointed as the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Chief Election Commissioner, effective May 15, 2022. He will take over as Chief Election Commissioner after incumbent Sushil Chandra steps down on May 14, 2022. He has been an ECI Election Commissioner since September 1, 2020.

According to a notification issued by the Law Ministry on May 12, the appointment is made by President of India Ram Nath Kovind in accordance with clause (2) of Article 324 of the Constitution. This was tweeted today by Union Minister of Law and Justice Kiren Rijiju. In the tweet, Rijiju also expressed his best wishes to Kumar.

About Rajiv Kumar

On February 19, 1960, Kumar was born. He holds B.SC, LL.B, PGDM, and MA Public Policy degrees. Kumar retired from the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in February 2020 after serving in the Bihar/Jharkhand cadre since 1984.In April 2020, he was appointed Chairman of the Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB), and on September 1, 2020, he joined the ECI as an Election Commissioner.
He brings 36 years of government experience in various central and state ministries spanning the social, environment and forests, human resources, finance, and banking sectors.

Kumar has served on the Central Boards of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), SBI, and NABARD, as well as the Economic Intelligence Council (EIC), the Financial Stability and Development Council (FSDC), the Bank Board Bureau (BBB), and the Financial Sector Regulatory Appointments Search Committee (FSRASC).
