The world’s tallest flagpole will be installed at Mumbai’s iconic holy shrine, Haji Ali Dargah, to hoist the national flag. According to a report, the Dargah committee intends to invite Prime Minister Narendra Modi to unveil the flagpole once it is completed. The Dargah, which dates back 550 years, is currently being renovated.
“The work on it will start soon,” quoted Haji Ali Dargah trustee Sohail Khandwani as saying. Currently a flagpole in Cairo (Egypt) at the height of 201.952 metres, is the tallest in the world.
“I had discussed it with Devendra Fadnavisji when he was chief minister (2014-2019) and he had liked the idea of hoisting India’s national flag at the world’s tallest flagpole on the premises of Haji Ali Dargah. On September 7, I reminded him of the Dargah’s plan for the tallest flagpole and he approved it,” said Khandwani.
Holiest shrines of Mumbai
The Haji Ali dargah, located on an islet off the coast and accessible via a paved pathway in Mumbai, is one of the city’s holiest shrines as well as a popular tourist destination. It is frequented by people of all faiths.
The monument was inscribed in the World Book of Records in 2020 as one of the world’s most visited shrines. The religious site receives 50,000 visitors per day, with up to 100,000 visitors on Friday, Sunday, and Thursday.
In August, with an aim to invoke the feeling of patriotism in the hearts of Indian citizens, the central government launched the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign under the auspices of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to encourage people to hoist the Tiranga at home to commemorate India’s 75th anniversary of independence.
