In an effort to combat the growing problem of waste dumping on roads and public spaces, the Kerala government has launched an innovative scheme that rewards individuals who report such illegal acts. Under the ‘Malinya Muktham Nava Keralam’ campaign, citizens can earn up to Rs. 2,500 for each report, encouraging active participation in keeping the state clean.
The order, issued by Additional Chief Secretary Sarada Muraleedharan of the Local Self Government Department, urges residents to report incidents of littering and dumping of solid and liquid waste in public spaces, private properties, and water bodies.
Rewards will be given to those who provide credible evidence, such as photographs or video clips, along with specific details regarding the time and location of the violation. Informers can submit their reports through WhatsApp or email, with the assurance that their identities will be kept confidential.
To support this initiative, local bodies are required to organize extensive awareness campaigns highlighting the importance of responsible waste disposal and encouraging citizens to report violations and claim rewards.
The enforcement teams have been empowered to seize and confiscate vehicles engaged in illegal garbage transportation. If necessary, offenders can be arrested, and legal action will be taken against them.
This progressive step by the Kerala government not only tackles the issue of waste management but also promotes community engagement in creating a cleaner and healthier environment for all.
