India’s greatest business tycoon Ratan Tata, the Emeritus Chairman of Tata Sons, has been awarded the RSS-affiliated Sewa Ratna for his contributions to philanthropy. However, he was unable to attend the event.
Apart from Tata, the honour was also bestowed upon Chalasani Babu Rajendra Prasad. At a ceremony attended by Uttarakhand Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh, twenty-four other dignitaries and institutions were also honoured for their selfless social service (retired).
Sewa Bharti
“The meaning of service can be learned from Sewa Bharti, it is an organisation that resembles selflessness. Someone who has no one has Sewa Bharti,” Singh said in a statement.
The distinguished personalities were awarded on the basis of “priceless contribution in social work or providing funds for social development”, Sewa Bharati said in the statement.
Trustees of PM-CARES
Last month, the 84-year-old industrialist was named as one of the new trustees of the Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations Fund (PM-CARES).
In addition to Ratan Tata, KT Thomas, and Kariya Munda, the government has named three people to the advisory board of the PM CARES Fund. Tata, along with the other trustees, will be responsible for the Trust’s accountability as well as achieving the goals for which it was established.
Further, they have also been charged with managing the contribution process to ensure proper application of the Trust property, and preparing and submitting all filings, accounts and returns as required under applicable law.
Meanwhile, Ratan Tata is the recipient of two of the highest civilian awards of India, the Padma Vibhushan (2008) and Padma Bhushan (2000).
