IIT Kanpur Develops “Shuddham” to Provide Clean Drinking Water to Households

IIT Kanpur has developed an affordable water purifier-cum-cooler called Shuddham, which is designed to provide clean drinking water to rural and urban households. Shuddham is a low-cost, user-friendly, and effective water purifier-cum-cooler that employs multi-stage purification to provide clean and cool drinking water.

Affordable and accessible to rural and urban households

The development of Shuddham is a significant milestone for IIT Kanpur and aligns with the institute’s commitment to bringing affordable and efficient technologies to the forefront. Shuddham is expected to cost around INR 4000 once it is launched, which makes it an affordable option for rural and urban households.

How it works?

Shuddham is a simple and easy-to-use water purifier-cum-cooler. It comprises two tanks: an upper storage tank for impure water and a lower reserve tank for purified water. The purification process involves three stages. In the first stage, the water passes through a cotton filter to remove solid impurities. A cartridge with activated carbon is then used to eliminate bad odors and chlorine. The activated carbon is derived from coconut shells using the heating furnace ‘MITRA’ in the MedTech Lab of Imagineering Laboratory, which adds to the effectiveness of the purification process. The third stage involves the use of a polymer membrane for ion exchange. The purified water is stored in the lower reserve tank, which incorporates copper fins to impart medicinal properties to the water. Both tanks are encased in a clay pot that leverages natural cooling and is further enhanced by a convection fan. Additionally, the system can be powered by a 10-watt mini solar plate, making it suitable for areas with limited access to electricity.

Shuddham is a significant innovation that has the potential to make a positive impact on the lives of millions of people in India. It is an affordable, user-friendly, and effective water purifier-cum-cooler that can provide clean and cool drinking water to rural and urban households. The development of Shuddham is a testament to the ingenuity and dedication of the team at IIT Kanpur, and it is a clear example of the institute’s commitment to bringing affordable and efficient technologies to the forefront.
