In partnership with distinguished institutions, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is embarking on a pioneering journey spanning 1.5 million kilometers, set to unravel new dimensions of knowledge about our nearest celestial body.

Raghunandan Kumar, Director at the Planetary Society, articulated the mission’s bold scope, explaining, “The Aditya-L1 mission is embarking on a 15-lakh-kilometer odyssey. Equipped with 7 cutting-edge instruments, our nation will delve into an in-depth study of the Sun over the coming 5 years.”
Sunward Bound: Aditya L1 Mission’s Historic Expedition
Scheduled for liftoff on September 2, the Aditya L1 mission holds the distinction of being India’s first foray into solar exploration. The spacecraft is destined to orbit the Lagrange point 1 (L1) within the Sun-Earth system, where the gravitational forces of both bodies create a delicate equilibrium. This strategic positioning will enable real-time observations of solar activities and their impact on space weather.
Precision Instruments: Keys to Unlocking Solar Mysteries
At the heart of the mission’s triumph are intricately crafted instruments poised to capture invaluable data and images of the Sun. The pivotal role played by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics in developing the main payload cannot be overstated.
Nilesh Desai, Director of the Space Applications Centre (SAC/ISRO) in Ahmedabad, emphasized the collaborative effort, stating, “While the main payload originates from the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, smaller institutes have also joined forces to contribute six additional payloads. This collaborative synergy defines the uniqueness of this exceptional mission.”

Anticipated to take approximately four months to reach its designated celestial location, the Aditya-L1 mission will initiate an exhaustive examination of the Sun. The onboard instruments will furnish a wealth of data, encompassing details about the Sun’s magnetic field, its outermost layer known as the corona, and its emissions.
