Nisha: A Remarkable Journey from Transgender to Lawyer

A few years ago, Arundhati Roy delved into the lives of transgender individuals in her novel ‘The Ministry of Utmost Happiness.’

The story revolves around ‘Anjum,’ a transgender person born as ‘Aftab.’ While the novel primarily focuses on Anjum, it reflects the harsh realities, challenges, and discrimination faced by transgender individuals in our society.

In India, they are often referred to as ‘kinnar,’ while in Pakistan, they are known as ‘khawaja-sara.’ However, in reality, they are often subjected to even more derogatory terms.

Begging at Traffic Signals

In our streets, transgender individuals are often seen begging, especially at traffic signals. Many people treat them poorly, adding to their struggles. In this context, Nisha Raav’s story is truly inspiring.

Nisha’s Early Life

Nisha Raav used to live with her family in Lahore. Being transgender was her destiny, and there was nothing she could do about it.

Typically, families do not treat such children kindly, but Nisha was fortunate. Her family showered her with love and care.

Relocating to Karachi

After completing her matriculation in Lahore, Nisha, along with her transgender friends, decided to move to Karachi.

She believed that leaving her hometown was in the best interest of everyone. Unlike her, many transgender individuals face neglect and cruelty from their families.

Nisha had to confront the ups and downs of life in Karachi. She learned to navigate the city’s streets and faced the trials and tribulations of life.

It was on these very streets that she began to dream of a brighter future, which has now become her reality.

Pursuing Education

After graduating, Nisha pursued a master’s degree in international relations from Karachi. In 2018, she passed the bar exam from Sindh Muslim Law College, becoming Pakistan’s first transgender lawyer.

Trans Pride Society

Nisha also established an NGO called the ‘Trans Pride Society,’ working towards the welfare of transgender individuals in Pakistan.

She considers herself fortunate to have been given the opportunity to progress in life and is now extending her hand to help others.

Nisha Raav’s journey from being a transgender person to becoming a lawyer is a tale of resilience, determination, and breaking barriers.

Her story serves as an inspiration to all, highlighting the importance of acceptance and equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of their gender identity.
