Empowering Tribal Youth in Maharashtra: A Constitutional Education Initiative

In the heart of Maharashtra’s Akola district, over 4,500 students in numerous schools are now gaining awareness about the Indian Constitution, thanks to the efforts of a young tribal activist, Akash Pawar. His mission is to educate school children about the Constitution (Constitutional Education), their fundamental rights, and duties, primarily focusing on tribal communities in western Maharashtra.

Akash Pawar, a 26-year-old hailing from the Thakar Adivasi community in Maharashtra, faced discrimination during his school days. The experience ignited a spark within him to raise awareness about constitutional rights among tribal youth. Pawar initiated the “Constitution Classes” in schools to empower students with knowledge about their rights and duties.

Spreading Constitutional Awareness:

Pawar’s initiative has reached 10 schools in Akola, educating around 500 students. These classes not only cover theoretical aspects but also include interactive games to instill concepts of equal opportunities, fair play, and fundamental rights.

Reflecting on his journey, Pawar shared a poignant incident from his hostel days when he confronted discrimination based on caste. This incident led him to question the unfair treatment and propelled him towards understanding the significance of the Constitution in guaranteeing rights. Pratibha, a 12-year-old student from J.R.D. Tata School, shares her preference for Akash’s classes over traditional civics lessons. She sees the Constitution not as a set of rules but as an integral part of life.

The initiative has garnered support from school principals, including Pratibha’s school principal, who commends the increased empathy and awareness among students regarding constitutional rights. Pawar’s efforts have influenced students to actively participate in local governance and civic activities.
