Diana award-winning teenager empowers unprivileged diabetic children

Divaa Uthkarsha, a compassionate teenager from Bengaluru, embarked on a meaningful journey after her younger brother was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. Witnessing the challenges faced by underserved communities in accessing proper care and medication, she founded Project Surya to provide assistance and raise awareness about diabetes among underprivileged adolescents. Her remarkable efforts have earned her The Diana Award, recognizing her exceptional commitment to social action and humanitarian work.

Diabetes Care in Underserved Communities

Divaa Uthkarsha’s project, named after her brother Surya, tackles the significant barriers to diabetes care in underprivileged communities. The project adopts a three-pronged approach of awareness, advocacy, and funding, with a focus on empowering children living with Type 1 diabetes. By collaborating with the “Samatvam Science and Research for Human Welfare Trust” and conducting awareness sessions in schools and rural areas, Project Surya has reached over 100 underprivileged children, providing crucial information and support.

Raising Awareness and Donating Insulin Syringes

Project Surya conducts informative sessions led by medical experts, including endocrinologists and dieticians, to create awareness about diabetes prevention and general health. These sessions have reached approximately 2,000 students in Bengaluru schools, while also engaging with 30 ASHA workers responsible for 1,000 people in their respective communities. Through fundraising initiatives and a petition to remove GST on insulin, the project has raised funds to donate over 500 free insulin syringes, ensuring that vital medication is accessible to those in need.

Future Endeavors

Divaa Uthkarsha’s exceptional dedication to supporting underprivileged diabetic children has earned her The Diana Award, a prestigious honour celebrating her remarkable social impact. Looking ahead, she plans to expand Project Surya’s reach by introducing an “adopt a child plan,” encouraging long-term support for insulin needs.

Collaborating with NGOs, she aims to prioritize the mental well-being of these children and increase offline counselling sessions. Additionally, Uthkarsha’s project has been selected to be presented at the 1M1B Activate Youth Summit at the UN Headquarters in New York later this year.

Inspiring Change Through Personal Passion and Commitment

Despite managing her studies as a Class 10 student, Divaa Uthkarsha remains steadfast in her dedication to Project Surya. Her passion for making a difference in the lives of underprivileged diabetic children fuels her drive and motivates her to optimize every minute of her day. With her transformative efforts and vision, Uthkarsha is determined to continue improving the lives of countless children in need, creating a brighter and healthier future for all.
