New Era in Bengaluru Metro: Driverless Metro Trains to Operate for the First Time in India

Bengaluru, known for its congested traffic, especially on major routes like Silk Board Junction and Electronic City Corridor, is set to overcome its transportation woes. The Yellow Line of Bengaluru Metro is soon launching driverless metro trains. Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has announced the commencement of the city’s first driverless metro train service.

Journey from China to Bengaluru

Recently, six prototype coaches for the driverless metro trains arrived in Bengaluru from China. These coaches, a part of the Purple Line, will operate from RV Road to Electronic City via Silk Board. The new coaches have been transported to the Hebbagodi depot in Electronic City for final preparations before their public launch.

The journey of these advanced coaches began in China, following a contract signed in 2019 worth ₹1,578 crore for 15 trains. Each train will consist of six coaches and will be deployed on the Yellow Line. The first prototype was sent to India on January 24, 2024, and arrived at Chennai Port on February 8, 2024.

Rigorous Testing Ahead

Before the operation of driverless trains begins, they must undergo rigorous testing to ensure safety and efficiency. The trains have been designed to pass various stringent trials. According to officials from BMRCL, obtaining technical approval and completing the entire process, including setting up the prototype train on the Yellow Line and conducting all trials, is expected to take approximately five to six months.

Network Expansion and Benefits

The Yellow Line spans 19.15 kilometers, connecting crucial areas from RV Road to Bommasandra. It integrates several key locations, including the busy Silk Board Junction and the technical hub of Electronic City. The introduction of driverless trains on this line is expected to improve the capacity and efficiency of metro services. It also aims to alleviate congestion on heavily trafficked roadways.

Despite the completion of civil and track work on the Yellow Line, trials have been delayed due to the absence of the new coaches. It’s worth noting that these driverless coaches are manufactured by a Chinese firm.

This initiative marks a significant milestone for Bengaluru Metro, aiming to enhance public transportation and reduce urban traffic congestion. With the introduction of driverless trains, Bengaluru is poised to set an example for smart city transportation solutions in India.
