One FASTag, One Vehicle: NHAI Cracks Down on Multiple Tags

One FASTag, One Vehicle: Tired of juggling multiple FASTags for your car? Worry no more! The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is launching the “One Vehicle, One FASTag” program to make your highway journeys smoother and faster.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has introduced a new rule to improve the electronic toll collection system. They are cracking down on misuse of FASTags, the electronic toll payment system used on national highways. Starting January 31, 2024, any FASTags with a valid balance but incomplete KYC (Know Your Customer) information will be deactivated by banks.

NHAI encourages users to complete the ‘Know Your Customer’ (KYC) process for their latest FASTag to align with RBI guidelines. After 31st January, only the latest FASTag account will remain active, and users are advised to discard all previously issued FASTags.

To avoid inconvenience, users must complete KYC for their latest FASTag and get rid of any previously issued FASTags through their banks. For assistance, users can contact toll plazas or the toll-free customer care number of their issuer banks.

Understanding FASTag’s Role

FASTag serves as an electronic toll collection system in India, managed by NHAI. Using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, it enables toll payments directly from the linked prepaid or savings account or directly from the toll owner.

Why the Change?

  • Efficiency Boost: Multiple FASTags for one vehicle slow down toll plazas and create unnecessary delays. This program aims to streamline toll operations and keep traffic flowing.
  • Playing by the Rules: Using one FASTag for multiple vehicles, or getting FASTags without completing KYC (Know Your Customer) violates RBI guidelines. This program ensures everyone follows the rules.
  • No More Sticker Scrambles: Accidentally misplaced your FASTag sticker? No problem! With just one tag per vehicle, you won’t have to worry about finding the right one every time.

Benefits for Everyone:

  • Faster Toll Payments: No more stopping to pay cash at toll booths, meaning quicker journeys for everyone.
  • Reduced Congestion: Smoother flow of traffic at toll plazas.
  • Clearer Records: Accurate toll collection data for better highway management.

Positive takeaway

With over 8 crore users and a 98% penetration rate, FASTag is already revolutionizing toll payments. The “One Vehicle, One FASTag” program takes it a step further, ensuring efficient, comfortable, and hassle-free rides on India’s national highways. So, get on board and experience the smoothest journey yet!
