Govt introduces FREE Healthcare in public hospitals from August 15

In a momentous move to enhance healthcare accessibility, the Maharashtra government has declared a transformative policy change. Starting August 15, all 2,418 public hospitals across the state will provide free treatment and screenings. This strategic shift aims to ease the financial burden on citizens seeking medical services.

Making Essential Services Affordable

The initiative seeks to revolutionize healthcare by making crucial services affordable for every citizen. If any public hospital attempts to charge for treatment, individuals are encouraged to report such incidents via the toll-free helpline at 104.

Government Resolution Explained

Health Minister Tanaji Sawant’s initial announcement on August 3 has been further clarified through a recent government resolution.

This resolution outlines that essential services like OPD registration, lab tests, and screenings such as ECGs and X-rays will be offered without charge. Hospitals will provide medications locally when available, free of cost to patients. Additionally, indoor patients will be discharged without any fees.

A Welcome Relief for Millions

With around 25.5 million individuals seeking medical help in public hospitals, this policy aims to significantly alleviate patients’ financial burdens. However, it’s important to note that the policy won’t extend to hospitals under the medical education department.

Implementation and ID Requirement

Dr. Radhakishan Pawar, Deputy Director of Health Services, has confirmed that this free treatment provision will be implemented across district hospitals, rural hospitals, and primary healthcare centers. Patients will only need to present a government-issued ID for registration.

This progressive initiative marks a significant step forward in providing affordable healthcare for all citizens in Maharashtra, showcasing the government’s commitment to the well-being of its people.
