Chellammal, residing in Rangachang, South Andaman, employs innovative farming techniques to nurture her coconut plantation. She utilizes coconut leaves and husks as mulching, a method involving the covering of soil with organic materials like bark, wood chips, and leaves. This practice helps retain soil moisture, particularly during the post-rainy season.
Natural Pest Management
In her commitment to sustainable farming, Nariyal Amma embraces Integrated Pest Management. Instead of harmful chemicals, she employs ‘trap plants’ specific to each plantation, attracting insects that release pheromones. This disrupts the pests’ natural mating cycle, effectively controlling their population without resorting to harmful substances.
Chellammal has successfully implemented coconut-based multi-species cropping on her 10-acre land. This integrated farming system involves planting various crops such as elephant foot yam, banana, groundnut, pineapple, sweet potato, green chilly, tube rose, gladiolus, marigold, and green vegetables.
