IIT Madras Offers 4-year BS in Programming & Data Science, Anyone Can Apply



Following the success of its online BSc in Programming and Data Science course, India’s top-ranking institute, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, is now offering a BS Degree course option as well. The BSc in Programming and Data Science now has a four-year BS Degree in Data Science and Applications option. According to the IIT, this is made available due to high demand from students across the country. Students can complete an 8-month apprenticeship or a project with companies or research institutes as part of their BS degree.

Eligibility

Students in their final year of high school can also apply and be accepted into the programme. Admitted students will begin the programme after completing their 12th grade. Students from any stream can enrol.There is no upper age limit. Anyone who has completed Class 10 English and Mathematics is eligible to apply. Because the classes are delivered online, there are no geographical restrictions. The application deadline for this Data Science Program’s September 2022 term is August 19. Interested students should apply online at onlinedegree.iitm.ac.in.

“This first-of-its-kind program makes it possible for students to study from IIT Madras without attempting the intensely-competitive Joint Entrance Examination (JEE). This directly benefits the students from rural areas and economically disadvantaged backgrounds for whom attending JEE coaching classes would be a significant hurdle. The program also offers up to 100% scholarships for deserving students in financial need,” the IIT said in official notice.

Course to provide multiple entry and exit options

This course is designed to provide students with multiple entry and exit options, with the learner earning a certificate, diploma, or degree depending on the level at which they leave the course. This gives learners flexibility and empowers them to choose what they want to achieve through this programme. These multiple entry and exit points are part of the NEP’s flexibility.

Segments students get to learn in the course

Students will learn how to manage data, visualise patterns to gain managerial insights, model uncertainties, and build models to help them make effective business decisions. The students will be well trained to meet industry standards through extensive hands-on training and experiential learning, according to the IIT, who will also facilitate internships and placements for students who have completed the diploma level of the programme.

Currently, more than 13,000 students are enrolled in the programme, with the maximum number of students from Tamil Nadu, followed by Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. In-person exams are conducted in 116 examination centres across 111 cities in India. The examination centres have also been opened in the U.A.E., Bahrain, Kuwait, and Sri Lanka.
