EPFO Updates Verification Process: Aadhaar Card No Longer Accepted as Proof of Birth

The Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made a significant change in its date of birth verification process. In a recent update, Aadhaar cards are no longer accepted as proof for correcting or updating the date of birth.

Let’s delve into the details of this important development.

Why the Change?

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) observed that Aadhaar was being used as proof of date of birth, which was not in line with the Aadhaar Act, 2016. While Aadhaar is a unique identifier, it does not serve as proof of birth according to the law. Consequently, EPFO has removed Aadhaar from the list of acceptable documents.

What’s in the Circular?

EPFO issued a circular on January 16, emphasizing the need to delete Aadhaar as a proof of date of birth. The circular highlights that Aadhaar is being removed from the list of acceptable documents for correcting the date of birth.

Alternate Documents for Date of Birth Update:

For those looking to update or correct their date of birth in the EPF account, the following documents are now accepted:

  1. Birth Certificate
  2. Marksheet from any government board or university
  3. School leaving certificate
  4. School transfer certificate
  5. Medical certificate issued by Civil Surgeon
  6. Passport
  7. PAN number
  8. Government pension documents
  9. Mediclaim certificate
  10. Domicile certificate (should contain name and date of birth)

About Aadhaar

Aadhaar, a 12-digit identification number issued by the UIDAI, is widely used for identity and address verification. However, it is crucial to note that Aadhaar is not considered a valid birth certificate.

Legal Implications and UIDAI’s Stand:

The UIDAI’s circular, referring to the Aadhaar Act, 2016, and related regulations, clarified that Aadhaar cannot be used as proof of date of birth. Recent legal judgments, including one by the Bombay High Court, reinforced this stance. The EPFO’s decision aligns with UIDAI’s directive and emphasizes the importance of accurate documentation.

Positive Takeaway

This move by EPFO reflects a shift in identity verification practices, aligning with the UIDAI’s emphasis on Aadhaar’s role in identity verification rather than proof of birth.

It underscores the significance of staying compliant with the latest regulatory updates for accurate and acceptable documentation. EPFO members and entities involved in date of birth corrections are advised to take note of this change.
