On September 16, 2022, Shri Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, will inaugurate the pre-production phase of India’s first lithium cell manufacturing facility in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh.
Munoth Industries Limited, based in Chennai, invested Rs. 165 crores in the construction of this cutting-edge facility. The facility is housed in one of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two Electronics Manufacturing Clusters, which were established in 2015.
India’s first Lithium Cell Manufacturing Plant: Facts
1. The presently installed plant’s capacity is 270 Mwh and it can produce 20,000 cells of 10Ah capacity daily.
2. These cells are used in power banks and this capacity is around 60 percent of India’s present requirement.
3. Cells for other consumer electronics like Mobile Phones, wearable, and hearable devices will also be produced.
4. Shri Chandrasekhar also said that the inauguration of this plant will be a step in the direction of realizing Prime Minister Modi’s vision of making India the global hub of electronic manufacturing.
India imports lithium cells
India currently imports all of its lithium-ion cell requirements from China, South Korea, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. Shri Chandrasekhar will also visit United Telelinks and Dixon Technologies, both of which are located in the two EMCs.
What are lithium cells and their uses?
Lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries are used in many products, including electronics, wireless headphones, toys, small and large appliances, electric vehicles, handheld power tools, and electrical energy storage systems. If the cells are not properly managed at the end of their useful life, they can cause harm to human health or the environment.
