9-Karat Gold Hallmarking : In a major development aimed at ensuring transparency and consumer protection, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has announced that hallmarking of 9-karat gold jewellery will be mandatory starting July 2025. This move brings 9KT gold into the list of hallmarking grades that already include 14KT, 18KT, 20KT, 22KT, 23KT, and 24KT.
The decision follows the increasing demand for affordable and lightweight gold jewellery, especially among younger buyers.
What is Hallmarking and Why is it Important?
Hallmarking is the official process of certifying the purity or fineness of precious metals such as gold and silver. Governed by the BIS Act, 2016, hallmarking ensures that the gold you purchase meets a legally defined standard of purity.
A hallmark typically includes:
- BIS logo
- Purity/fineness grade (e.g., 22K916 for 22-karat gold)
- Six-digit alphanumeric HUID (Hallmark Unique Identification)
- Jeweller’s identification mark
- Assaying and hallmarking centre’s mark
Why it Matters:
- Protects Consumers: Prevents cheating by guaranteeing the promised purity.
- Builds Trust: Certified items are more credible and easier to sell or exchange.
- Helps Law Enforcement: Traceable gold can assist in theft recovery.
So far, over 40 crore gold items have been hallmarked with a unique HUID, offering unprecedented transparency in the gold market.
How to check if your jewellery is Hallmarked

To ensure the authenticity of your gold item, look for the following:
- Check for the BIS Hallmark Symbol: A triangle with a dot inside, accompanied by other markings.
- Look for the HUID: A unique 6-digit alphanumeric code laser-marked on the jewellery.
- Use the BIS Care App:
- Available on Android and iOS.
- Enter the HUID to verify authenticity and jeweller registration.
- Ask for a Bill with Hallmarking Details: A reputable jeweller will always provide a detailed invoice.
With gold prices climbing steadily, many consumers are choosing 9KT gold, which has about 37.5% gold content, making it more affordable and durable for everyday wear. As demand grows, mandatory hallmarking will safeguard buyers and enhance accountability in the jewellery sector.
Whether you’re buying a heavy bridal necklace or a simple daily-wear chain, always insist on hallmarking. It’s your right, and now, for 9KT gold too, it’s the law.
