Consuming Honey Beneficial During Winter? Here’s What Expert Says

Honey is high in minerals such as magnesium, iron, and calcium. According to Ayurveda, honey has been used for centuries for a variety of medicinal purposes. The winter season, between fall and spring, is the best time to consume honey. You also don’t have to worry about your lungs or gut health if you consume raw honey. Honey in its raw form is unadulterated, unpasteurized, and unheated.

Experts agree on the subject as well, believing that honey is the best infection prevention because it strengthens the immune system. It is high in minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants, all of which are beneficial to the body in various ways.

Benefits of Honey

Dt. Sheenam Narang, Dietitian and Founder of dietbysheenam, shared some benefits of consuming honey during winter.

Beneficial against diabetes and ageing: Honey contains antioxidants such as flavonoids and phenolic acid. These antioxidants protect our bodies from reactive oxygen species (ROS), which accumulate in the body and harm cells, potentially leading to serious health problems such as type 2 diabetes, premature ageing, and heart disease.

Soothe a sore throat: Respiratory tract infections, sore throats, and coughs are common during the winter. Against these, a traditional and effective remedy is to drink honey with tea or warm lemon water.

Immune system booster: Honey is extremely beneficial for immune system strengthening. It is also recommended to consume it on an empty stomach for best results and protection against all external body threats.

Side effects of Honey

According to Dt. Narang, even though honey contains beneficial substances such as antioxidants and propolis, it has the same effect on the body as sugar.

Honey should not be given to children under the age of one because it can cause botulism. This uncommon but severe illness damages the body’s nerves, causing difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and, in some cases, death.
