UP Govt will now Assess Mental Health of Students

The Uttar Pradesh government will now assess the mental health and intelligence of students in state-run schools. According to officials, the assessment will assist the government in addressing the issues of primary and secondary students so that they perform better in the future.

The Prayagraj Bureau of Psychology has created a questionnaire for this purpose. There are 48 questions, each with five possible responses: Agree, Disagree, Neutral, Strongly Agree, and Strongly Disagree.

This will be sent to schools where teachers will take the responses of students and send them back to Prayagraj. Subsequently, psychologists will assess their answers and prepare a report based on them.

Sole aim of assessing mental health of students

Usha Chandra, director of the Bureau of Psychology, Uttar Pradesh, said, “Our sole aim is to ensure that students in primary and secondary schools perform well academically. Our experts have prepared a questionnaire to assess the mental health and intelligence quotient of students studying in council schools. We will try to figure out if students are facing any problems at the school level or if anything is lagging at the parents’ front.”

150 schools of all 75 districts are participating

The draft questions have been distributed to the Basic Education Officers of all 75 districts by the Bureau of Psychology. Teachers will be given the responsibility of assessing children’s mental health based on their responses.

Initially, each district will have 150 schools participate in the exercise. Gradually, it will be covered by all public schools.

The Bureau of Psychology experts will assess students’ responses and produce a report with recommendations for how to address the issues (if any). Following that, an exercise will be performed to help students improve their learning skills.

Special plan for academically weaker children

Along with this, a special plan will be prepared to ensure that academically weaker children are on par with other students.

The data of mental health assessment will remain confidential as per the letter sent to Basic Education Officers.
