Kolkata emerged as India’s safest city for second consecutive year

According to the latest 2021 report from the National Criminal Records Bureau (NCRB), Kolkata will be the safest city among 19 Indian cities in 2021 for the second year in a row. The report stated that cognizable offences recorded per lakh population of Kolkata have been sliding for the past seven years. The total number of cases slid from 18,277 in 2020 to 14,591 in 2021.

Kolkata maintains its place on the enviable list for the second consecutive year. Kolkata held the particular position in 2018 and 2020. NCRB in 2019 claimed that it had not received state’s data. The progressive decrease in crime has resulted in score of 103.4, which is calculated based on the number of cognizable offences recorded per 1 lakh people per year. Kolkata is followed by Pune with a crime score of 256.8,
Hyderabad at 259.9, Kanpur at 336.5, Bengaluru at 427.2, and Mumbai at 428.4.

Kolkata has also seen the lowest number of suicides compared to the top metropolitans including Delhi, Maharastra, Bengaluru, Chennai and Hyderabad.

Reacting to the same, All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) in a Twitter post stated that “This was only possible owing to West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee’s strict monitoring and the tireless efforts of our (Kolkata) police personnel.”
