Prisoners at Indore Central Jail are creating environmentally friendly Ganesh idols in preparation for Ganesh Chaturthi, which is just around the horizon.

The inmates of Indore Central Jail have developed a distinctive method of creating idols in an effort to protect and maintain the environment. They are moulding clay into the shapes of idols and embedding fruit and flower seeds within the idols.

Central Jail Superintendent Dr Alka Sonkar told, “These idols are eco-friendly, and the prisoners are giving beautiful shapes with clay, seeds of fruits and flowers have been put in these idols, which will be able to grow trees after immersing them.”

200 idols being made

“More than 200 idols are being made. The idols being made in the jail will be sold to the people from the jail store. A big statue of Bal Ganesh is also being made which will be installed on Ganesh Chaturthi in the jail itself,” she added.

“For this, the prisoners were also given training in skill development,” she stated.

Ganesh Chaturthi, also called Vinayaka Chaturthi, in Hinduism, 10-day festival marking the birth of the elephant-headed deity Ganesha, the god of prosperity and wisdom. It begins on the fourth day (chaturthi) of the month of Bhadrapada (August–September), the sixth month of the Hindu calendar. This time Ganesh Chaturthi will be observed on 31 August 2022.
