The Punjab government announced reservation for Scheduled Castes in positions of law officers recruited by the state government on August 21. According to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, 58 new law officer positions in the Advocate General’s office will be reserved for Scheduled Caste.
These posts will be filled up in the coming days, he said. “When I took oath as chief minister, I asked my officers whether there was any provision of reservation in the appointment of law officers in the Advocate General’s office and they replied in the negative.
“When I asked them whether we can we make such a provision, they said the government can take such a decision,” Mann said in a video message. These additional 58 posts being created in the AG’s office will be reserved for SCs, he said, adding the decision was taken after consulting legal experts.
First state to have such provision for SC lawyer
Mann stated that Punjab will be the first state in the country to have such a provision for SC lawyers. The announcement comes a day after Mann stated that no other state has reservation in these posts during a meeting with members of the Valmiki community on the issue of appointment of law officers, but the Punjab government will soon provide “good news.”
Mann went on to say in his video message that he has always believed in providing equal opportunities for the youth of the SC community to excel in all fields. He emphasised that the state government is making every effort to provide the community with equal opportunities for progress and prosperity. Mann claimed that, unlike previous governments that made only lip service to community welfare, the Aam
Aadmi Party government has taken concrete steps in this regard.
According to an official statement, the department of Home Affairs issued an advertisement in this regard, inviting applications from eligible Scheduled Caste Advocates/ candidates for employment as law
officers in the office of the Advocate General of Punjab in Chandigarh and the Legal Cell in New Delhi. Eligible candidates may apply for the position by September 13.
