Janmashtami 2022: Date, History, and Significance of the festival

The Hindu festival of Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami, Krishnasthami, or Gokulashtami, commemorates Lord Krishna’s birth. Janmashtami 2022 will be widely celebrated in Mathura and Vrindavan, the cities where Krishna is said to have been born and raised. Janmashtami is a festival for followers of Lord Krishna, who usually observe it by fasting and performing pooja.

Janmashtami 2022, like most Indian festivals, includes the preparation and consumption of a delectable array of sweets and other food items. On Janmashtami, people go to the temple to pray and honour Lord Krishna by acting out his life from the books. Janmashtami 2022 is one of the country’s most widely celebrated festivals, enjoyed by everyone from children to the elderly.

Janmashtami 2022 Date

In India, Janmashtami 2022 will be celebrated on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadrapada (July-August). There has been some confusion this year about whether Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated on August 18 or August 19.

The Vedic Panchang predicts that Ashtami Tithi will begin at 9.21 PM on August 18 and end at 10.59 PM on August 19, 2022.

As a result, Janmashtami 2022 will be observed on both days, with Nishith Puja beginning at 12.02 a.m. on August 18 and ending at 12.48 p.m. on the same day.

Janmashtami 2022: What is the history of Dahi Handi?

According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna enjoyed curd, white butter, and milk as a child. Krishna and his friends used to steal it from their neighbours and other villagers. The villagers also complained to his mother about his stealing habits. She advised the villagers to store the freshly churned makhan in an earthen pot at a height out of reach of little Krishna.

However, the plan failed when Krishna and his friends began building human pyramids to reach the handi. Every year on Janmashtami, people organise Dahi Handi and build a human pyramid to break the earthen pot kept at a height to celebrate Krishna’s mischievous tricks.

Janmashtami History

According to Hindu mythology, on this day, Lord Krishna, the human incarnation of Vishnu, was born to destroy Mathura’s demon King, Kansa. He was Krishna’s virtuous brother Devaki’s brother.

Krishna, Devaki and Vasudeva’s son, was born on the eighth day of the dark fortnight in the Bhadrapada month (August-September) in Mathura.

Janmashtami 2022 Significance

Janmashtami is observed to send a message of light and positivity during difficult times. Mathura was ruled by Krishna’s uncle, Kansa, who wanted to kill his sister’s children because a prophecy said the couple’s eighth son would bring Kansa’s downfall. He imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva and killed their first six children after the prophecy.

However, when a seventh child, Balram, was born, the foetus mystically transferred from Devaki’s womb to Princess Rohini’s. When Krishna, the eighth child, was born, the entire palace fell asleep, and Vasudeva rescued the child to Nand Baba and Yashoda’s house in Vrindavan.
