Life History of Goswami Tulsidas

In the year 1532, Tulsidas was born to Atmaram and Hulasi Devi in the Uttar Pradesh village of Rajapur. Tulsidas allegedly had 32 teeth when he was born, and instead of sobbing, he used the name Rama for his first words. He started to be referred to as Rambola as a result. Rambola was sent away with the housemaid who looked after him only four days after his parents abandoned him. Five years after her passing,
Tulsidas was taken in by Narharidas, a Vaishnava ascetic in Ramananda’s monastic order, where he first began to study religion and spirituality. His name Tulsidas was given to him by Narharidas himself.

Tulsidas died at the of 126 on Assi Ghat, a bank of river Ganga in Varanasi.

There is a legend that states Tulsidas loved his wife Ratnavali so much that one time he swam the Yamuna river to visit her when she went to her father’s house. Ratnavali was incensed by this and told Tulsidas that he would have already gained moksha (salvation) if he had showed this passion for Lord Rama rather than her. Tulsidas left her after learning this and moved to Prayag to lead an ascetic lifestyle. From that point on, he began to adore Lord Rama with the highest dedication and began a new religious life. However, other academics contend that Tulsidas lived a bachelor’s life and was never married.

Notable works of Goswami Tulsidas

Many people think that Maharishi Valmiki, who first composed the Sanskrit version of the Ramayana, was Tulsidas. Tulsidas discovered when studying the Ramayana that it is a work that only academics may read and is not meant for the general public. As a result, Tulsidas recreated the Ramayana in Awadhi and it became known as the Ramcharitmanas, a holy text that is accessible to both scholars and laypeople.
Many people think that Lord Hanuman himself helped Tulsidas write the Ramcharitmanas. Additionally, it is said that Lord Rama Himself gave him a personal audience.

It is also believed that Tulsidas founded the famous Sankat Mochan Hanuman Temple in Varanasi and also wrote the Hanuman Chalisa. Tulsidas also started the tradition of Ramlila plays, a folk-theatre adaption of the Ramayana. People also believe him to be a person of miracle and it is said that he once brought a dead Brahmin back to life.
