The Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, organised a two-week dairy farming training programme under the theme “Dairy farming – a profitable venture.”

Dr. Rajesh Kasrija and Dr. Y.S. Jadoun coordinated the training programme and reported that 13 trainees from various parts of Punjab had enrolled.

During the training, discussions were held about the most recent nutritional and health management; comfortable housing; effective first aid management; preventive vaccination and deworming; breed improvement through the use of better germplasm; milk value addition; reproductive and seasonal management. Trainees received both theoretical and practical knowledge of dairy farming.

Recording of basic vital parameters

Trainees practiced recording basic vital parameters such as rectal temperature, respiration rate, restraint, calculating animal weight without measuring balance, and milk testing. They were taught to distinguish between healthy and diseased animals.

Dr. R.K.Sharma, Professor and Head of the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education, informed the farmers about the training programmes that Vet varsity organises throughout the year to prepare a trainee to be a good entrepreneur in the field of Dairy, Poultry, Goat, Pig, or Fish farming.

He added that the University also publishes books and magazines in Punjabi, Hindi, and English for livestock farmers. Farmers can also get advice from university experts by calling the dedicated numbers 62832-97919 and 62832-58834 of Pashu Palak Tele Advisory Kendra (PP-TAK).

Dr. R. K. Sharma and the department’s faculty members presented participation certificates to trainees during the valedictory session. Dr. P.S. Brar, Director of Extension Education, praised faculty members for their contributions to the training program’s success and stated that the livestock sector is diversifying at a rapid pace.

GADVASU is constantly working to improve the socioeconomic status of livestock owners by supplying them with new inputs. He stated that dairy farming is a very profitable business, but that there is an urgent need to farm on scientific lines.
