According to an official, the Chhattisgarh government is planning to purchase cow urine from cattle ranchers, which will then be used to make pest control products. Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel will launch the scheme, under which the government will purchase cow urine for a minimum of Rs 4 per litre.
The programme, he says, will be launched at ‘Hareli,’ a local festival in Karsa village, Patan block, Durg district. He went on to say that the purchase of cow urine will begin in Raipur from a ‘gauthan’ (livestock shelter) at Navagaon (L) in Abhanpur block and village Badgaon in Arang block.
Godhan Nyay Yojana
The flagship ‘Godhan Nyay Yojana,’ which also includes cow dung procurement, was launched two years ago with the goal of providing income to cattle-rearing families and organic farmers while also strengthening the rural economy. Under this scheme, cow dung is purchased from cattle-raisers for Rs 2 per kg.
The purchased dung is used on a large scale to produce organic manure, which is then used in the fields by farmers, promoting organic farming in the state.
Govt to purchase cow urine
“Following the success of the cow dung procurement scheme, the government has decided to purchase cow urine. The purchased urine will be used to make pest control products as well as ‘Jeevamrut’ (liquid organic fertilizer),” according to the official.
The scheme aims to reduce the use of costly chemical pesticides while also encouraging organic farming in the state by making organic pesticides affordable to farmers.
“In the last two years, the state government has purchased over Rs 150 crore in cow dung, and self-help groups (SHGs) have produced over 20 lakh quintals of vermicompost, super compost, and super plus compost from it,” he added.
