Cyprus has opened its first underwater archaeological park, providing visitors with a glimpse of history at one of the best preserved ancient harbours in the eastern Mediterranean.
The now-submerged harbour off the ancient city-kingdom of Amathus was built between 312/311 B.C. and 294 B.C., when Cyprus was the site of conflict between two Alexander the Great successors. Because of its narrow entrance, it was most likely built as a naval base, though experts say its combined commercial use cannot be discounted.
Over the centuries, it has developed into a natural reef where marine life thrives.
