PM Modi urges farmers to use natural farming to target international markets

On July 10, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged farmers to practise natural farming and meet demand around the world. Millions of people are fed by natural farming, which also “protects” them from “deadly diseases brought on by pesticides and chemicals.”

Modi spoke via video link to a Natural Farming Conclave held in Surat, where he discussed the development of natural farming in Gujarat and said that the “Surat model” of natural farming might serve as a template for the entire nation.

75 farmers from each village panchayat selected to get into natural farming

The prime minister claimed that in Surat, 75 farmers from each village panchayat were chosen by village committees, taluka committees, and district committees to engage in natural farming. This, he continued, led to the adoption of natural farming by more than 40,000 farmers from more than 550 panchayats in a short period of time.

Modi also mentioned the five-km natural farming corridor being developed along both banks of the river Ganga. Such corridors can also be developed on the banks of the Tapi and the Narmada rivers, Modi said.

Natural farming linked with Namami Gange Programme

He also said that the government linked natural farming with the Namami Gange Programme — the government’s flagship scheme for cleaning up the Ganga.

While the entire globe is now discussing “sustainable lifestyles,” Modi claimed that India had “thousands of years of expertise and experience” in this field. “For centuries, we have steered the world in this direction. As a result, we now have the chance to participate in campaigns like natural farming and advance the work of global agricultural prospects for the good of everybody, he said.

“The country has been working seriously in this direction for the last eight years. Today, farmers are being given resources, facilities and support through programmes like Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana and Bharatiya Krishi Paddyati,” Modi said.

The government has also put in place a quality assurance system for the certification of natural farming produce, he said.

“Our farmers are exporting such certified crops at a good price. Today, chemical-free products have become the centre of attraction in the world market. We have to take this benefit to more and more farmers of the country,” Modi said.

Research into India’s ancient knowledge in the field of natural farming

Modi also called for more research into India’s ancient knowledge in the field of natural farming, and into ways in which this knowledge can be communicated and implemented as per the demands of modern times.

The conclave was also attended by Gujarat Governor Acharya Devrat and Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.
