Why India needs ‘Agnipath’ and ‘Agniveers’



The Indian military is overhauling its recruitment process for personnel below officer rank, with the goal of deploying fitter, younger troops on the front lines, many on four-year contracts.

On June 14, defence minister Rajnath Singh unveiled the ‘Agnipath’ scheme, saying the “transformative initiative would provide a youthful profile to the Army, Navy, and Air Force.” Men and women between the ages of 17.5 and 21 will be recruited for the armed forces under the new system.

However the government later on june 16 night announced the upper age limit for candidates will be increased to 23 from 21 for 2022, as a one-time waiver. The relaxations have been allowed due to Covid disruptions over the past two years.

Agnipath scheme:

1. Total of 46,000 soldiers will be recruited this year on four-year contracts.
2. Indian youngsters will be provided an opportunity to serve in the armed forces as ‘Agniveers’.
3. Age limit will be 17.5 to 23 years .
4. First year salary package of Rs 4.76 lakh with upgradation of up to Rs 6.92 lakh in forth year.
5. Post released: Seva Nidhi package of approx. Rs 11.71 lakh, including interest (tax free).
6. Non contributory insurance cover of Rs 48 lakh.
7. Agniveer skill certificate will assist in post release job opportunities.

Terms of services for Agniveers:

1. Agniveers will be enrolled for duration of 4 years, including training period.
2. Agniveers will meet the medical eligibility conditions as applicable.
3. Agniveers can opt. out of enrollment into regular cadre.
4. Upto 25% of agniveers from each batch will be enrolled in regular cafre of armed forces.

Terminal benefits for Agniveers

1. Each Agniveer will contribute 30% of monthly salary to the individual’s Agniveer Corpus Fund.
2. It will compromise Agniveer contribution, interest thereon and matching contribution from govt.
3. Option for bank loans for Agniveers.
