World Environment Day 2022: Theme, signification and history of the day

In the universe there are billions of galaxies, in our galaxy there are many planets, but there is ‘Only One Earth’, with this message, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is celebrating World Environment Day 2022 on June 5 every year, since 1973.

About The World Environment Day 2022 Theme

The theme of World Environment day 2022 is- ‘Only One Earth’ focuses on “Living Sustainably in Harmony with Nature,” as it calls for collective, transformative action on a global scale to celebrate, protect and restore our planet.

First World Environment Day was celebrated 50 years ago with the motto “One Earth only”. Fifty years later, that is still the case because the Earth is our only home and humanity must conserve its limited resources. The Global World Environment Day 2022 campaign uses the #OnlyOneEarth theme to call for changes in policies and decisions to enable a cleaner, more environmentally friendly and more sustainable life in harmony with nature.

Significance and history of World Environment Day 2022

This UN international day has become the largest global platform for environmental outreach, with millions of people from across the world engaging to protect the planet.
2022 is a historic milestone for the global environmental community as it marks 50 years since the 1972 United Nations Conference on the Human Environment, widely seen as the first international meeting on the environment.

The Stockholm Conference in 1972 encouraged the establishment of environmental ministries around the world and launched various new global agreements to protect the environment together. Poverty reduction and environmental protection goals are also linked here, paving the way for sustainable development goals. At the Stockholm Conference, the idea for World Environment Day was officially announced and the first celebration was held in 1973.
