No tobacco day 2022 : Tobacco- threat to our Environment

World No Tobacco Day is observed on May 31 to raise awareness about the damage caused by consuming tobacco.

Consuming tobacco kills over 80 lakh people across the world every year. Besides the human lives, consuming tobacco also causes the environment degradation.

Tobacco consumption is one of the factors that are believed to adversely impact the efforts to achieve the UN adopted sustainable development agenda by 2030, which aims to reduce tobacco-related deaths by one-third by that time.

Theme for No Tobacco Day 2022

The member countries of WHO agreed to observe World No-Tobacco Day on May 31 since 1987 with a relevant theme of each year. The 2022 theme FOR No Tobacco Day is “Protect The Environment”. As per WHO, “The harmful impact of the tobacco industry on the environment is vast and growing adding unnecessary pressure to our planet’s already scarce resources and fragile ecosystems.”

Jharkhand chosen for No Tobacco Day Award-2022

The World Health Organization (WHO) recognises governments, organisations, and people for their efforts and contributions in reducing tobacco use every year. WHO has chosen Jharkhand for the World No
Tobacco Day (WNTD) Award-2022 this year. India has a National Tobacco Control Program in place to educate people about the dangers of tobacco use. It also assists in the formulation of policies and activities that may aid the government in achieving its goal. In 2012, the programme was expanded to include Jharkhand.

Health Implications caused by tobacco

Tobacco use can cause lung cancer, which primarily affects people who have smoked cigarettes for a long time. Around 80 to 90 percent of patients diagnosed with lung cancer had smoked at some point in their lives. Tobacco use is the main cause of death in men, and it is the second leading cause in both men and women.
