Solar Pumps Bring Prosperity To Farmers In Chhattisgarh: Increases Income By 63% And Reduces Pollution

In a major shift towards renewable energy, Chhattisgarh has installed over 1.26 lakh solar pumps, replacing 82% of the diesel pumps used in fields for irrigation. This move has not only reduced pollution, but has also increased the income of farmers by 63%.

How Solar Pumps Benefit Farmers in Chhattisgarh

The Chhattisgarh Renewable Energy Agency (CREDA) and NABARD Consultancy Services (NABCONS) conducted a study that revealed that the installation of solar pumps has benefited farmers in several ways. With the use of solar pumps, farmers’ expenditure on diesel and electric pumps has halved, leading to a significant increase in their farm income.

Farmers who used to earn around Rs 1.50 lakh from 5-6 acres of land, now earn up to Rs 5-6 lakh with adequate irrigation facilities provided by solar pumps. After paddy harvesting, additional income of Rs 40-50 thousand is generated from the production of wheat, gram, and vegetables.

Solar Pumps Reduce Dependence on Electricity and Diesel Pumps

Moreover, the use of solar pumps has reduced pollution by eliminating the use of diesel pumps, which emit harmful particulate matter and nitrogen oxides. As a result, carbon emissions have decreased by 6 lakh tonnes annually, and 6500 lakh units of electricity have been saved in a year.

CREDA is continuously working towards installing solar pumps in remote areas to eliminate dependence on electricity and diesel pumps. Around 18,000 solar pumps were installed last year, and a target of 20,000 pumps has been set for this year.

Insured and Maintained for Five Years

To ensure the maintenance of the solar pumps, they are insured and maintained for five years by COMC and the insurer. CREDA also provides an online complaint facility, ensuring that any problems are resolved by the concerned contractor immediately.

Overall, the installation of solar pumps in Chhattisgarh farms has been a game changer for farmers’ income and the environment. It has not only reduced their expenditure but has also increased their income significantly, while also benefiting the environment by reducing pollution.
