Centre launches PoP under e-NAM to facilitate farmers; Know how it helps

On July 14, Union Minister for Agriculture Narendra Singh Tomar launched the Platform Of Platform (PoP) under the Electronic National Agriculture Market (eNAM) project at a State Agriculture and Horticulture Minister’s Conference held in Bengaluru, Karnataka.

The minister stated that the Center is trying to enhance e-NAM, an online trading platform for agricultural products in India, in order to increase the transparency of the farm industry.

Tomar said the government aims to promote “digital” agriculture so that farmers do not have to go to the market and depend upon middlemen. Around 1000 agricultural mandis have been directly linked to e-NAM to eliminate intermediaries, thereby generating farmer business. He also stressed the need for technology to track agricultural produce in a field.

What is PoP?

The National Agriculture Market (eNAM), an electronic trading platform created by the government, aims to create a statewide network of physical mandis that are reachable online. This portal includes a platform of service providers such as composite service providers, logistics service providers, and quality assurance service providers since it is a “platform of platforms.”

The PoP brings together 41 service providers who enable different value chain services on multiple platforms. These include market intelligence, trading, finance, warehousing, quality control, and transportation.

How does it will benefit farmers?

In addition to assisting farmers in exporting their produce outside of their states, the PoP will improve the price search mechanism and quality-commensurate price realization.

Direct digital connectivity to a variety of markets, buyers, and service providers will be available to farmers. The PoP will give farmers, FPOs, dealers, and other stakeholders access to a range of products and services along the agricultural value chain through a single point of contact, according to a statement from the ministry.
